Crafting your Resume to Standout

Crafting your Resume to Standout

August 15, 20242 min read

I recently read an insightful article from The Standout on LinkedIn:

I used to think my resume was all about me – my skills, my experience and my goals. But I had it backward. A resume should really be about the employer and their goals. Think of potential employers as your customers. Listen carefully to what they say, and you’ll find out what they want “to buy.” Fortunately, it’s easy to learn what employers want to buy. Just read the job description – it’s all there. Your job is to then tailor your resume, so it sells the skills and qualifications a potential employer wants. Remember, the key to a successful job search is to position yourself as the perfect solution to the employer’s needs!.

I couldn’t agree more!

Here are three (3) reasons why this perspective is crucial and three (3) tips for crafting your customised resume for that next job:

Three (3) Reasons Why Your Resume Should Focus on the Employer’s Needs:

  1. Employer-Centric Approach:By focusing on the employer’s needs, you demonstrate that you understand their challenges and how you can be an asset to their team.

  2. Increased Relevance:Selling your transferrable skills and tailoring your resume to the job description ensures that your qualifications align with the specific requirements of the position, thus making you a more attractive candidate. Remember the hiring manager or recruitment agency only wants to read your skills and experience that are relevant for the job application.

  3. Stand Out:In a competitive job market, a resume that speaks directly to the employer’s needs helps you stand out from other applicants who may not have customised their resumes.

Three (3) Tips for Crafting Your Resume:

  1. Analyse Job Descriptions:Carefully read and highlight the key skills and qualifications mentioned in the job advertisement. Make sure your resume reflects these attributes and the use of key works and/or phrases.

  2. Use Keywords:Incorporate relevant keywords and phrases derived from the job description into your resume. This can help your resume get past applicant tracking systems (ATS) and into the hands of hiring managers and recruitment agencies.

  3. Showcase Achievements:Instead of listing responsibilities, highlight your accomplishments/achievements that demonstrate how you have successfully addressed similar challenges in current and/or previous positions.

And the best tip of all?
