March Career Reset: Why Now is a Great Time to Review your Resume in Australia

March 12, 20262 min read

March always feels like the true beginning of the professional year.

School has returned. Universities and TAFE are in full swing. Workplaces are settled back into routine. And for many Australians, the early-year optimism has shifted into reflection.

Is this the right position for me?

Is this where I want to be in 5-10 years?

Should I be positioning myself differently?

This is what I call the “March career reset.”

Why March Matters in the Australian Job Market

In Australia, hiring cycles often gain momentum in late Q1 and Q2. Budgets are clearer. Teams are restructuring. Projects are launching and may need to be completed before the end of financial year.

Yet many professionals wait until they see a job advertised before updating their resume.

That’s backwards.

The strongest candidates prepare before they apply.

A Resume Is Not Just a Document

Your resume is a strategic positioning and personal branding tool. It should:

  • Reflect measurable achievements

  • Align with your career goals

  • Pass Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and be compliant

  • Use current industry language

  • Demonstrate leadership where relevant.

If your resume hasn’t been updated in over 12 months, it’s likely misaligned with the current employment market and recruitment trends.

From First Job to Executive Level

Over the past 20 years, I’ve worked with:

  • School leavers entering the workforce

  • TAFE apprentices progressing in trades or apprenticeships

  • University graduates navigating competitive markets

  • Mid-career professionals seeking promotions

  • Executives transitioning confidentially.

Every stage requires a different strategy:

A graduate resume is not an executive/C Suite resume.

A trade application is not a board-level document.

March is the ideal time to pause, review and reposition. If you’re feeling that quiet nudge that something needs to shift — listen to it.
