As we celebrate our 6th Anniversary, it’s a time to reflect on our business journey and share our insights we have gained along the way. Here are 6 lessons we have learned in our 6 years of business, along with 6 tips for job seekers and 6 tips for optimising your LinkedIn Profile.

Firstly, 6 things I have learned in 6 years of business:

  1. Adaptability is key – the business landscape is always changing and since 2020 there has been a lot of changes for business owners. So being flexible and open to new strategies and changes to how we work is crucial for business growth.
  1. Customer Focus – listening to our customers and prioritising our needs has helped us build strong and lasting relationships.
  1. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work – a dedicated and passionate team is the backbone of any successful business. Even if you are sole trader, it is crucial to develop relationships and be an active member of local networking groups (including accountability groups).
  1. Continuous Learning – staying updated with industry trends and constantly learning new skills has kept us competitive.
  1. Financial Discipline – managing finances wisely and having a clear budget helps us navigate through prosperous and challenging times.
  1. Resilience and Perseverance – every business faces setbacks, which I have faced many over the last 6 years (ie. my initial one was leaving a national resume writing franchise I was with for 15 years and starting my own business). It’s the resilience to overcome them that defines long-term success.

6 Tips for Job Seekers:

  1. Tailor your Resume – customise your resume for each job application to highlight your transferrable skills and experience that are relevant for the next job you are applying for.
  1. Leverage Networking Opportunities – connect with professionals in your industry, which can often lead to job opportunities (ie. a large percentage of jobs are never advertised but are found through networking efforts). Volunteering is another avenue to extend your networks and industry contacts.
  1. Preparing for Interviews – research the company and practice common interviews questions to boost your confidence. Did you know that ECM Consulting offers a service in interview coaching?
  1. Showcase your Soft Skills – employers value effective communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills. Make sure you highlight them in your resume as achievements and during the interview.
  1. Follow Up after an Interview – send a thank you note to express your appreciation and re-iterate your interest in the position. Please note this should be emailed to all interviewer/s within 24 hours of the interview being held.
  1. Stay Positive – job hunting can be challenging and time consuming. Remember to maintain a positive attitude and stay persistent.

6 Hot Tips for Optimising your LinkedIn Profile:

  1. Complete your Profile – ensure your LinkedIn Profile is fully completed at All-Star Level (including professional photo, headline and summary).
  2. Highlight Key Skills – Add relevant skills to your profile and remember to seek endorsements from colleagues and supervisors (ie. this is a verification of your skills).
  3. Engagement – share industry-relevant content (ie. to show your expertise in your industry), comment on posts and participate in LinkedIn groups to increase visibility.
  4. Network Effectively – connect with professionals in your field and personalise connection requests with a brief message.
  5. Showcase Accomplishments – use your profile to highlight achievements, certifications, projects and honours/awards that demonstrate your expertise.
  6. Seek Recommendations – request recommendations from previous or current employers/supervisors and/or colleagues to build credibility.
