The Importance of Networking, even if you are shy …

In today’s competitive job market, finding your dream job often involves more than just sending out resumes and waiting for a call. 2. Set Realistic Goals:

Don’t expect to walk into an event and leave with a job offer. Set achievable goals, like introducing yourself to three new people or collecting business cards.

3. Prepare Your Elevator Pitch:

Have a concise and engaging introduction ready. Briefly describe who you are, what you do and what you’re looking for in your career. Practice it until it feels natural.

4. Listen Actively:

Networking isn’t just about talking; it’s also about listening. Ask questions and show genuine interest in others. You’ll be surprised at how much people appreciate a good listen.

8 Top Questions to Ask a Professional Resume Writer

8 Top Questions to Ask a Professional Resume Writer

As a leading Resume and LinkedIn writer in the Toowoomba and Darling Downs region with 19 years’ experience, some of the most common questions I receive from clients include the following:

1. How can I search for job opportunities?

My top tips for searching for jobs include:

  • Online job boards (including Seek, Indeed and LinkedIn)
  • Company websites
  • Networking – both online and offline networks including LinkedIn. Networking with people in your field or industry can also be a great way to learn about job openings.

2. How should I prepare for a job interview?

You should research the company, review the job description and requirements, and practice answering common interview questions. It’s also important to prepare a list of 3-4 questions to ask the interviewer about the company and the role. Remember the interview process is not only an opportunity for the interviewer to find out you, but you, the job candidate to determine if the employer is a good fit.

3. What should I include in my resume?

Your resume should include a summary/profile, professional experience including relevant skills and achievements, education and referees, if applicable. Your resume should be tailored and key-word rich for each job that you are apply for (ie. highlighting your skills and experience that are most relevant to the advertised position).

4. Does ECM Consulting prepare resumes and other job application documents?

Yes we prepare resumes and all other job application documents using a ATS compliant layout and key wording.

5. How long should my cover letter be?

Your cover letter should be brief, key-word rich and to the point, typically no more than one (1) page in length. The focus should be explaining why you are a good fit for the job and how your skills and experience align with the position’s requirements.

6. How do I follow up after a job interview?

It’s a good idea to send a thank-you email to the interviewer/s within 24 hours after the interview. This is an opportunity to reiterate your interest in the position and to thank the interviewer/s for their time. You can follow up again in a week or two (2) if you haven’t heard back from the company.

7. How can I negotiate my salary?

When negotiating your salary – do not do this during the interview, unless the job advertisement has specified the salary range. It’s important to have a clear understanding of the market rate for the position and to be able to articulate the value you bring to the company. It’s also helpful to have alternative offers or offers from other companies as leverage. Remember to be professional and respectful during salary negotiations.

8. What should I do if I don’t hear back after applying for a job?

If you don’t hear back after applying for a job, it’s okay to follow up with the company to inquire about the status of your application (ie. the acceptable period is 2-3 weeks). Be polite and concise in your email or call and avoid being pushy or demanding. Unfortunately, a lot of employers and/or recruiters are not contacting job candidates unless they are shortlisted – be aware if they make mention of this on their job advertisement!

How to Improve Your LinkedIn Profile in 5 Easy steps.

How to Improve Your LinkedIn Profile in 5 Easy steps.

57% of employers / recruiters will not consider job candidates if they don’t have a social media presence and are conducting Google searches as part of the shortlisting process to check candidates’ personal brand. 87% of recruiters are using LinkedIn as part of the recruitment and shortlisting process”. A candidate’s LinkedIn profile will come in the top 3 of a Google search, if their profile is properly optimised and completed.

Now you have a LinkedIn Profile you are ready to start getting noticed and find that job you are after. Did you know that LinkedIn is a database that is searchable; ie. search engine optimisation (SEO); and people can search LinkedIn for keywords and profiles? As the number of platform users on LinkedIn grows, it’s getting harder to create a profile that stands out and gets attention.

FIVE KEY AREAS TO IMPROVE YOUR LINKEDIN PROFILE:

  1. Headline – this is the most crucial section of your profile to use keywords, and you have 220 characters to make a standout first impression (ie. when someone searches via keywords on LinkedIn – your profile’s image, name and headline are first shown). Your SEO ratings are improved by 25 times by using industry and role specific keywords in this section. This means your headline is key in getting people to “click through” to your profile.
  1. About – the about section is key to your positioning on LinkedIn and it’s important to look at this section through the lenses of your ideal client or employer/recruiter. Make sure you include what results you can help your clients achieve or as a job seeker highlight any career achievements, values and passions.
  1. Employment Experience – your profile is about your future, NOT your past, which is especially true for your employment section. It’s not merely a tribute to past jobs, listing roles and responsibilities. With 2,000 characters capacity for each role, it’s to be used as a search engine optimised (SEO) sales and marketing tool.
  1. Skills and Endorsements – this section is a significant contributor to your SEO rankings and keywords. By taking control of your skills and endorsements, you can use them to support your career goals. List skills that are consistent with your future business or career goals (Tip – make sure you pin the top 3 skills relevant to your future job aspirations), which gives you the opportunity to be endorsed by others and supports SEO outcomes.
  1. Recommendations – what others says is more important than what we say about ourselves (ie. recruiters/employers can check your recommendations from your current/previous supervisors and/or colleagues for clarification purposes). A well-written recommendation should include SEO keywords. [1]
